Gate 3 · Ordering

A messy beginning. Something new comes out of chaos, and the order in it only shows with time.

What it is like

You start new things in the middle of chaos, and you have the strength to push through it. When a first attempt shows nothing yet, it's easy to call it a failure, though usually it's simply the start.

When someone close has it

New things often arrive with this person, even if at first they look like confusion. Try to hold off judging until something takes shape.

A question for today

Which of my beginnings am I judging too early today?

The six lines of gate 3

  1. Line 1 · First Stone

This line looks for a foothold before anything in the chaos starts to settle. First you want to understand what the mess is made of, gather the facts, and find one sure point from which it is possible to move. Such calm reconnaissance gives a lasting beginning. When the sure point stays out of sight for long, it is easy to get stuck in preparation and put off the start, although part of the order only appears in motion.

  2. Line 2 · Consent Deferred

Here ordering comes naturally, but not at every call. You have a gift for arranging things that works best when nobody pushes, and others often come with proposals before your time has come. The old image is of someone who turns down the first suitor and waits for the matter to ripen. Sometimes too many requests at once muddle your thinking, and it is hard to tell an offer worth taking from plain haste.

  3. Line 3 · Unguided Chase

This line learns to order chaos by walking into it blind. You rush after something that looks promising, lose the path, pull back, and next time you know more about the terrain. Every such expedition leaves a map that cannot be drawn in advance. When the chase goes on too long, it is easy to wander deep into the thicket and miss the moment when turning back is the wiser move.

  4. Line 4 · Shared Harness

Here order comes about through people you trust. A hard beginning becomes lighter when you look for support from someone close and lay out the first steps together. Your connections bring support at the moment when your own strength is not enough to get moving. Sometimes you wait for an invitation that does not come, and then it is hard to admit that the first move toward the other person is also yours to make.

  5. Line 5 · Small Gifts

This line makes others see in you someone who will sort out their mess. They come with problems from work or home and expect you to know where to begin. The old advice is to give a little at a time, because small, concrete support works better than a grand rescue plan. When expectations grow, it is easy to promise more than can be carried, and then someone else's chaos starts to weigh on you.

  6. Line 6 · Distance from Chaos

Here a hard beginning is seen from the perspective of someone who knows many such starts. Over time you learn that mess at the outset is part of anything worth doing, and you show this to others through your calm. The old image is a moment when the wagon stands still and tears flow. Sometimes weariness from so many beginnings makes you stop where you are, although that is exactly when a fresh look is useful.
