Gate 55 · Spirit
Moods with their own weather. Sometimes there is fullness and plenty, sometimes emptiness, and it needn't depend on what happened.
What it is like
Your moods come in waves and don't always have an outside cause. At the top of the wave you feel plenty and ease. Sometimes you look for someone to blame for a worse day, when it is simply a lower wave.
When someone close has it
Clear highs and lows of mood are part of life for someone with this gate, often for no visible reason. Try not to take it personally, and give them time until the wave turns.
A question for today
What mood am I in today, and do I need to find a reason for it?
The six lines of gate 55
Line 1 · Equal Companion
This line looks for solid support for mood. You want to understand where what you feel comes from, and it is easiest when someone with a similar rhythm is nearby, with whom you can share the same wave for a while. In such company mood needs no explanation. When that person is missing, it is easy to look for an explanation in facts and give the mood a cause it does not have.
Line 2 · Stars at Noon
Here mood works naturally and without effort, like a sky that, darkened at noon, reveals stars. In a darker moment you see things invisible in full light, and you do not need to do anything for it to come. You do best when nobody demands explanations from you. Sometimes others take your mood personally, and then it is easy to try convincing them instead of leaving it to sincerity.
Line 3 · Midday Darkness
This line learns mood through what does not work. You try to take control of it, plan, fix, and only when your hands drop do you see that the wave has a rhythm of its own. Every such moment teaches you where your influence ends. When attempts follow one another, it is easy to decide something is wrong with you, though it is the same capacity for deep feeling.
Line 4 · Familiar Glow
Here mood circulates through the people you know. Your swings pass on to friends and family, and in a good circle you find someone of similar depth with whom a darker day stops weighing on you. It is through these relationships that your spirit affects others. When such a person is missing, it is easy to bring your mood to every gathering and take someone's reaction as the answer to a question nobody asked.
Line 5 · Invited Light
This line makes others see in you someone who can lift the spirit of a whole group. When the atmosphere sinks, they expect you to bring people and ideas to the table that will brighten it. You have a gift for gathering those who shine. Sometimes they expect good cheer from you even on a day when your wave is low, and then it is easy to play a mood you do not have.
Line 6 · Curtained House
Here you look at your own mood from a distance and teach others by how you live with it. People see that one can have a house full of feelings without pouring them over everyone around. Over the years this restraint ripens into a calm that teaches others more than words. When distance turns into closure, it is easy to curtain the windows so tightly that nobody looks in on you any more.
