Gate 44 · Sensing
A feel for people. It quickly becomes clear whether someone fits a task, because memory recalls what happened before.
What it is like
You recognise people and what they can do before you can explain why. That lets you match the right people with the right tasks. Sometimes, though, an old pattern hides who someone is today.
When someone close has it
This person quickly senses what someone is capable of and who can be trusted. Ask for their impressions, and still give people a chance to show themselves in a new light.
A question for today
Who am I judging today by an old pattern, rather than by what I see?
The six lines of gate 44
Line 1 · Brake of Memory
On this line recognising a pattern works like a brake. Before you trust someone or begin something, memory brings back how similar situations ended, and you look for firm footing in that. This caution keeps you from repeating a familiar mistake. When the brake holds too tight, it is easy to stop even what only resembles an old pattern and is actually something new.
Line 2 · Fish in the Basket
You sense people without effort and do not need to practise it. What you recognise you keep close, like a supply in a basket, without setting it out at once on the table for guests. Others come when they want to know whom to trust, and then your sensing speaks with confidence. At times, when someone presses for a verdict too early, you hand over a supply that is still ripening.
Line 3 · Familiar Return
On this line you learn patterns by walking into them. You meet people with whom something repeats, and only the third or fourth similar event shows what is really going on. You walk with an unsteady step, but the tradition says there is no great mistake in it. At times the repeats wear you out, and it is easy to see yourself as someone who learns nothing, though you are learning right then.
Line 4 · Remembering Your Own
Your sensing works through people you have known for a long time. You remember how each person reacts and what suits whom, and so you can bring the right people together at work or at home. Friendship here is a store you draw from. The tradition warns with the image of an empty basket. When you neglect the people who are close, it is easy to lose exactly the knowledge you rely on.
Line 5 · Hidden Fruit
Others see in you someone who can read anyone and tell them whom to trust with a matter. Your recognition ripens out of sight, like fruit under leaves, and arrives in time, without noise. This projection can be very practical, because people expect concrete decisions about others. When accuracy fails, it is easy to face blame for a wrong judgement, though your sensing speaks only of an old pattern, not of the person today.
Line 6 · Recognition from Afar
From this line you look at human patterns from a distance and see how they repeat in many lives, not only yours. For years you test them on yourself, then you step back, and later others learn from you how to read people without prejudice. The tradition shows a meeting on the horns. When the distance hardens, it is easy to keep people at horn's length and let nobody closer.
