Gate 35 · Change
Hunger for the new. The unknown pulls hard, and once it's known, boredom sets in with the urge to move on.
What it is like
You are drawn to new experiences and you learn by going through them. Each one leaves knowledge you can pass on. The familiar often bores you quickly, and it is hard to stay with one thing for long.
When someone close has it
Someone with this gate is often the first to want to try something and soon looks for the next thing. Ask what they take away from it, because their experience can be a useful map for others.
A question for today
What do I want to try today, and what do I really want to take from it?
The six lines of gate 35
Line 1 · Held-Back Start
This line wants to move into something new, but first it runs into the fact that it has neither the trust of others nor certainty of its own yet. From the inside you feel a hunger to try and, at the same time, a need to know something about the new thing before stepping into it. When nobody believes you yet, it is easy to lose heart, and it is better to take it calmly and prepare the ground, because trust comes with time.
Line 2 · Sorrowful Road
This line goes into a new experience with a weight, as if every change also had its sorrowful side. You do not have to look for it, it comes by itself, and help often appears from an unexpected direction, from someone older or more distant who sees your worth. It can happen that this sorrow seems a sign you are going the wrong way, when often it is simply the price of really going.
Line 3 · Consent of Many
This line goes into the new together with others, and only in that movement does it find out what works and what does not. From the inside it resembles a shared expedition, in which one person's mistake becomes a lesson for everyone and trust grows with every stumble made together. When nobody around wants to move, it is easy to get stuck in plans alone and grow weary before anything begins.
Line 4 · Moving in Secret
This line looks for the new among friends and for friends, often quietly, gathering for itself before others notice. From the inside it is a curiosity that wants to have something first, and a network of people through which new things reach you fastest. When change turns into mere acquiring, it is easy to strain the trust of those same people, because what is done in secret tends to become visible in the end.
Line 5 · Indifference to Outcome
This line goes through change without counting gains and losses, and others see in this a maturity they are looking for. People often come to you when they face something new, because your calm about the outcome looks to them like a ready solution. It can happen that they then expect the change you propose to pay off, and when it does not, it is easy to be left holding their disappointment.
Line 6 · Turning Inward
After many experiences this line turns the edge of change towards itself rather than towards the world. Over the years you stop chasing novelty and start putting your own yard in order, and others learn from it what a mature change looks like. It can happen that this strictness with yourself goes too far and takes away the joy of what has already been lived, even though that is where most of the story lies.
