Gate 1 · Creativity
A handwriting all its own. Whatever someone with this gate makes is recognisable at once, even without a signature.
What it is like
You create in your own way, and that style can't be faked. It works best when nobody tries to correct it. Inspiration often comes in its own time, not when a deadline says so.
When someone close has it
Someone with this gate does things their own way and often can't explain how. It helps to give them room rather than smoothing their ideas into something more ordinary.
A question for today
What am I doing my own way today, and what only because it's expected?
The six lines of gate 1
Line 1 · Hidden Start
This line keeps your own form beneath the surface until it has solid ground under it. From the inside it looks like a long study of the material, sketches that stay in a drawer, checking how a thing is built before you show anything. The old image is a dragon that does not yet leave the water. When someone hurries you, it is easy to show something too early and feel that it is not yet yours.
Line 2 · Visible Gift
Here your own form of expression comes out into the open field with little effort. You do something your way at the kitchen table or during a break at work, and only someone else's delight shows you that it has value. It goes best when nobody looks over your shoulder. Sometimes the call from outside arrives just when you would rather stay with your own thing, and then an invitation is hard to tell from an interruption.
Line 3 · Watchful Until Evening
This line tests its form in action, through attempts that do not work. You work all day and in the evening you are still going over what fails and why. Every failed version teaches you something no handbook gives. When failures pile up at once, it is easy to take your own style for a mistake, although it is more like the material from which that style is only just emerging.
Line 4 · Leap from Depths
Here your own form looks for the people in whose company it can show itself. Your creative work grows in conversation with someone you know well, in a small circle that knows your style and makes room for it. The old image is a leap that has not yet left the deep. Sometimes you wait too long for the right circle, or you trade your form for what the people close to you expect.
Line 5 · High Flight
This line carries your own form high up, where many people see it at once. Others easily see in your style an answer to something they are looking for, and they come asking for a solution. Your work then begins to serve others too. When expectations grow faster than what you truly want to make, it is easy to start faking yourself just to match someone else's picture.
Line 6 · Summit and Return
Here your own form looks at itself from a distance, like someone who already knows the price of climbing too high. Over time, the size of the next work matters less to you and whether it is true matters more. You teach others by how you work. Sometimes distance turns into coolness, and then it is hard to go back to ordinary making for the pleasure of it.
