Gate 19 · Wanting

A sense for what others are missing. Hunger, cold or a need for closeness can be felt before anyone mentions them.

What it is like

You sense what someone is missing before they say it out loud, and you want to take care of it. Sometimes you take on other people's needs and forget to ask about your own.

When someone close has it

Moods and needs in a group rarely escape someone with this gate, and they often check that everyone is alright. Tell them plainly what you need, so they don't have to guess.

A question for today

What do I need today, and am I saying it out loud?

The six lines of gate 19

  1. Line 1 · Stepping Together

This line looks for firm footing before it answers someone else's need. You want to know what a person truly needs, not only to feel that something is missing, and only then do you step in. It goes most surely for you together with others, step by step, when everyone knows where they stand. When the ground is unclear, you may pull back from closeness because you do not know what you are allowed to give.

  2. Line 2 · Unforced Care

Here sensing someone else's need works with no effort at all. You do not have to ask what is missing at the table, at work or at home, you simply know, and others keep drawing it out of you. You do best when you also have a moment for yourself, away from other people's requests. When everyone comes for something, it is easy to lose the line between what you give gladly and what you give out of habit.

  3. Line 3 · Too Sweet

This line learns closeness through attempts that do not work out. You may promise someone too much, approach too sweetly, or take on a need you cannot carry. When you notice it and take it to heart, things get back on track. Bonds along this line tie and loosen, and each one teaches you where your care is real and where it is only polite.

  4. Line 4 · The Close Circle

Here sensing needs works through the people you know. You know what your friends, neighbours and team are missing, and your care reaches far precisely because it flows through trusted ties. You can come as close as needed and not a step further. When someone outside the circle asks for the same, you may feel resistance, because without knowing them it is hard for you to sense what they really want.

  5. Line 5 · Measured Closeness

This line makes others see you as someone who will look after the needs of the whole group. You can divide your attention so that everyone gets their share, and people gladly hand you that role. Your solutions are practical and suit many people at once. When the expectations grow faster than your strength, it is easy to be left with the bill for the whole community and nobody to show it to.

  6. Line 6 · Generosity from Afar

Here care ripens at a distance. Over the years you react less to every need around you and show more of how to give generously and honestly, without keeping count. Others learn this by watching your everyday choices. From that distance it can be hard for you to approach someone directly, and a need you sense clearly goes unanswered because you are waiting to be asked.
