Gate 63 · Doubt
Healthy suspicion. Does this really hold together? The wish to check comes before trust.
What it is like
You naturally check whether something makes sense, and you're rarely swept into hasty decisions. Sometimes, though, the doubt turns against you, or lands on someone's joy and sounds like knocking it down.
When someone close has it
Hard questions are this person's way in, and they don't take things on faith. Treat these doubts as help in testing an idea, not as a lack of trust.
A question for today
What am I doubting today, and can I simply check it?
The six lines of gate 63
Line 1 · Braked Wheel
Here doubt works like a brake on the wheel before the cart picks up speed. You want to check the basics first and only then allow yourself to agree. This caution at the start spares you many corrections later and gives you firm ground. When you brake every start, it is easy to stay with the question while everyone around you is already moving.
Line 2 · Found Without Searching
Your doubt often resolves without chasing the answer. You know something is missing from the reasoning, but you do not need to hunt it down at once, because the missing piece returns after a few days, in an ordinary conversation. It works best when someone asks you what does not fit. Others sometimes take this calm for indifference, although it is trust that the sense will turn up.
Line 3 · Long Campaign
Here checking takes a long time and teaches through attempts that miss. You question one claim, a second, a third, and some of them turn out to be dead ends. From every failed line of reasoning comes a better question and stronger proof. When proof is slow to come, it is easy to lean on anything at all just to close the matter, and then start everything again.
Line 4 · Patches in the Boat
This line doubts in order to protect the people it knows. You think about where a shared plan might leak, and you have a patch ready before anyone notices the water. Those close to you feel safer around you precisely because of this. When watchfulness lasts from morning to night, it is easy to tire yourself and the whole circle with constant searching for holes that may not be there at all.
Line 5 · Modest Offering
Others see in you someone who can tell a real contribution from an impressive facade. They come asking whether a plan is truly solid, and you show that a modest, sincere thing weighs more than a lavish one. This practical measure is useful to many people. When they expect a verdict from you, it is easy for you to be cast as someone who spoils every joy.
Line 6 · Wet Head
This line looks at doubt from a distance and teaches when to stop checking. Over the years you recognise that after crossing the river there is no point in looking back at every wave. Others learn from you how to end the checking and trust what already holds. Sometimes looking back pulls you into the current again, and you have to swim once more.
