Gate 58 · Aliveness

The gate of joy in improving things. You can see what could be done better, and the very thought of it gives energy.

What it is like

It makes you happy when something can be improved, and that gives you lots of energy. Your remarks usually come from love of the thing itself, though without an invitation someone may hear only nitpicking in them.

When someone close has it

This person is full of life and sees right away what could work better. When someone invites them to improve things, their comments sound like support.

A question for today

What do I want to improve today, and where is it enough that things are good?

The six lines of gate 58

  1. Line 1 · Inner Accord

Here the joy of improving comes from inner accord, not from somebody else's praise. You stand on what you already know about a thing, and only from there do you start to improve it. An ordinary morning over coffee can please you, because you see what in it could be done better. When that ground shakes, improving easily turns into nervous patching of everything at once.

  2. Line 2 · Sincere Delight

Your joy in improving things is sincere and shows without words. You do not plan it, you simply pick up someone's text or a broken lock and the thing gets better. People bring you such matters because they feel it pleases you. Sometimes you improve things where nobody asked for it, and goodwill is received as judgement.

  3. Line 3 · Chasing a Spark

Here you look for joy outside, by trial. You reach for new activities, people and ideas, and check which of them truly give you the urge to improve and which only a passing thrill. From every choice that misses you take knowledge of what brings you alive. When pleasure has to come from outside right now, it is easy to run from one thing to the next and finish none of them.

  4. Line 4 · Weighing the Choice

This line weighs what is worth improving before it gets to work, and it does so together with the people it knows. You talk with those close to you about which idea makes sense, and their voice makes the choice easier. Once the decision is made, the joy comes back in full. Sometimes the unease of weighing lasts too long, and among friends a council begins that has no end.

  5. Line 5 · Trust Under Scrutiny

Others see in you someone who can carry any improvement, and they come with whatever has got stuck in their lives. Your eagerness is practical and fits many matters and many people. Tradition warns here against trusting those who use that willingness without respecting it. When expectations outgrow what can be improved, it is easy for you to take on the blame for someone else's failure.

  6. Line 6 · Joy from Afar

This line watches the joy of improving from a distance and teaches it by example. Over the years you see that not everything is waiting to be fixed, and that part of the pleasure flows from what is already good. People learn this by watching how you live, not by listening to advice. Sometimes the charm of a new project pulls you further than you intend, and the distance disappears for a while.
