Gate · centre: Heart
Gate 51 · Shock
A sudden jolt that starts something. Someone steps in first where others hesitate and shakes everyone out of their routine.
What it is like
You have the courage to take the step others shrink from, and you often wake people up. You enjoy competition and sudden turns. The same jolt can be a beginning for some and only a shock for others.
When someone close has it
Someone with this gate can surprise and throw down a challenge, often without warning. Try to see it as an invitation to move, not an attack, and say when the pace is too much.
A question for today
What step am I hesitating over today, though I feel it is time to take it?
The six lines of gate 51
Line 1 · Laughter After Thunder
This line learns shock from the ground up. When something shakes you, you first want to understand what actually happened, and only then does relief come, sometimes even laughter. In everyday life this means a sudden change at work or at home becomes a lesson you return to. When understanding is missing, it is easy to stay in the first fright longer than it deserves.
Line 2 · Nine Hills
Here courage works by reflex. When a jolt comes, you move to a safe height and do not chase what has just been lost. Others see calm in this, though for you it is a natural move, without a plan and without effort, and tradition says that what is lost returns after seven days. Sometimes this stepping away looks like flight from outside, and someone calls you into a fight you do not need.
Line 3 · Moving While Shaken
This line learns courage through its own jolts. Surprise after surprise throws you off balance, but it is movement, not freezing, that lets you out of them. You discover what will not break you through situations that knock you off your feet for a moment. When shocks come in series, it is easy to believe the world is against you, though it is the same force that pushes you on.
Line 4 · Thunder in Mud
Here your courage works through the people you know. You can stir friends and family, pull them out of a worn rhythm, and they carry the impulse further. In good company a single sentence of yours can bring a whole gathering to life. When everything around is heavy and boggy, the impulse sinks, and it is easy then to strike harder and harder at a place that echoes nothing back.
Line 5 · Storm Work
This line makes others expect presence of mind from you when everything is shaking. When a crisis comes, eyes turn to you, because you look like someone who does what is needed in the middle of a storm. Jolts come and go, and you keep to the task. Sometimes others expect courage from you even where you have none in reserve, and then it is easy to pay someone else's bill.
Line 6 · Thunder Next Door
Here you watch shock from some distance. You see a jolt strike others and learn from it before it touches you, while people around you learn calm from you. Your life shows that not every storm has to be lived through on your own skin. When distance turns into avoidance, it is easy to stay outside events and hear about them only secondhand.
