Gate 47 · Realizing

A puzzle from the past. Images and memories circle in the mind until they suddenly click into place.

What it is like

Your mind sorts through the past and can find something new in it. When the meaning arrives, it brings relief and clarity. Pressure to understand right away often only clouds the picture.

When someone close has it

Things that happened get turned over for a long time by someone with this gate before they make sense. Try not to rush them. Understanding tends to come suddenly, in its own time.

A question for today

What from the past am I turning over, and do I need to solve it today?

The six lines of gate 47

  1. Line 1 · Dark Valley

On this line ordering the past begins with accepting that nothing is visible yet. You sit with images that do not fall into sense and look for a basis to understand them. The tradition shows someone entering a dark valley who does not see the way out for a long time. This darkness is a time of gathering. At times it is easy to take the lack of clarity as your own failure, though it is simply an early stage.

  2. Line 2 · Surfeit of Images

Understanding comes to you without effort when images lie side by side like dishes on a table and you do not have to choose. It happens best in quiet. Others come asking for meaning in their own matter and often get it from you in passing. When the calls grow too many, it is easy to drown in the abundance of other people's images and have no strength left for your own.

  3. Line 3 · Stone and Thorns

On this line you discover meaning through what does not fit. You try to explain the past to yourself one way, hit a stone, grab at thorns, and only that resistance shows where the thought goes astray. Every interpretation that misses leaves some trace of knowledge. At times the pressure to understand grows with each attempt, and then it is easy to blame yourself for something that is simply still settling.

  4. Line 4 · Slow Cart

Your understanding ripens in conversations with people you know. You return to old images over coffee with a friend, and gradually something clears, slowly, like a heavy cart on a road. The tradition says the end can be good despite the delay. When people close to you impose their own version of events, it is easy to accept it and set aside the meaning that is still on its way.

  5. Line 5 · Meaning for Others

Others see in you someone who will explain what actually happened and put their past together into an understandable whole. This projection is practical, because people want to take a decision away from your explanation. The tradition describes a pressure after which joy comes gradually. When your interpretation does not meet their hopes, it is easy to lose the trust of people who come for a ready answer.

  6. Line 6 · Tangled Vines

From this line you look at your own past from a distance and see that meaning comes only when you stop standing still. For years you try to understand everything, then you step back, and later others learn from you a calm towards what cannot be grasped at once. At times the fear of one more mistake keeps you in the vines longer than necessary.
