Gate · centre: Root
Gate 41 · Contraction
The gate of dreaming about what could happen. Pictures in the mind run ahead of reality, and the wish to act grows out of them.
What it is like
New experiences appear in your imagination before they actually arrive, and many things begin there. Reality often looks different from the dream, yet even with the letdown, living it can be worth it.
When someone close has it
Visions of what could happen come easily to this person. Listen to them with curiosity, and don't take them for a finished plan just yet.
A question for today
What have I been imagining lately, and do I want to live it or just think about it?
The six lines of gate 41
Line 1 · Measured Wanting
On this line, imagining what you want begins with checking what you can afford. Before a dream grows, you measure how much you can give and how much you can take. That gives you calm, because the desire stands on firm ground. At times the counting arrives so early that the image has no room to unfold and goes on a shelf before anyone sees it.
Line 2 · Quiet Reserve
Your imaginings come without effort and do not run low when you share them. They are born best when nobody is watching, and others reach for them, asking for an idea for an evening, a trip or a new start. You can give without making yourself smaller. When someone pulls you into action against your own rhythm, it is easy to hand over an image that is still ripening.
Line 3 · Road for Two
You test a desire by stepping into it with people, and only in practice does it show who is really going your way. The tradition puts it as an image: when three walk together, one falls away, and whoever walks alone meets a companion. Every parting tells you something about what you want. At times the company changes so often that it is hard to tell your own desire from someone else's.
Line 4 · Lighter Load
On this line desire grows among people close to you. You imagine something and know at once whom to tell, and friends come more readily when you put down what weighs on you. The most joy comes from a plan spun at a table with people you know. When the circle narrows, it is easy to keep the weight to yourself and wait for someone to ask first.
Line 5 · Entrusted Gifts
People see in you someone who can turn a hazy image into something that can actually be lived. They bring you resources, trust and their own dreams, hoping you know what to do with them. The tradition describes this as a gift that is not easily refused. When the imagining does not take the promised shape, the expectations return to you twice as strong, and it helps to say early what is only a possibility.
Line 6 · Wide Table
From this line you look at desire from a distance, and in time you see that the most lasting one is the one that adds to others without taking from anyone. After years of trying and of stepping back from people, your choices start to speak for you, and others learn from the way you live. At times the distance turns cool, and what you want for everyone hides what you want for yourself.
