Gate 39 · The Provocateur
A nudge that wakes people up. A tease, a joke or an awkward question, after which something stirs in someone.
What it is like
You can stir people so that what they really feel comes out. This gift brings conversations and relationships to life. A tease at the wrong moment, though, may land as nothing more than a jab.
When someone close has it
A person with this gate often provokes, sometimes without meaning to. Take it as an invitation to be honest and answer directly, rather than getting defensive.
A question for today
Who am I poking at today, and what am I really looking for from them?
The six lines of gate 39
Line 1 · Held Provocation
This line feels the pull to poke at others and test them, but first it wants to know where it stands. From the inside it is a tension between the urge to provoke and a hunch that moving right now will only sharpen the difficulty. When the poke comes out too soon, it is easy to stir up resistance instead of presence, and holding back can be wiser here than any word.
Line 2 · Struggle for Others
This line provokes not for itself but for a cause or for someone, and it does so effortlessly, as if obstacles were drawn to it. You face difficulties one after another, and others often see this as your natural gift and call you in wherever a standstill needs shaking. It can happen that you then gather other people's resistance onto yourself and forget that not all of these obstacles are yours.
Line 3 · Return After Provoking
This line learns provocation the hard way: it pokes, meets resistance and comes back to try differently. From the inside it is a series of attempts in which you discover who responds with presence and who with coldness, and in time you know where it is worth striking. When another poke lands in a void, it is easy to decide the bond has broken, although coming back to yourself is simply part of this learning.
Line 4 · Waiting Together
This line does not throw itself at an obstacle but gathers the people it knows around it, and together with them tests who is really present. Your pokes work best among those close to you, because there they are read as care rather than attack. When you provoke strangers, misunderstanding comes easily, and then it is better to stop and wait until the bond has ripened enough for that kind of testing.
Line 5 · Timely Relief
This line provokes in the deepest standstill, and others see in it the signal they have long been waiting for, and they arrive to help. Often you become the point around which people gather, because your poke wakes presence and readiness to act in them. It can happen that they then expect you to shake loose every difficulty for them, and when it does not work, it is easy to become the target of their disappointment.
Line 6 · Counsel From Afar
This line looks at provocation from a distance and in time understands that not every obstacle needs moving. Over the years you more often stay where you are and watch who turns up of their own accord, and this patience teaches others what real presence is. It can happen that such holding back looks from outside like giving up, when it is often the most mature way of testing who is really there.
