Gate 26 · The Egoist

A gift for selling. A thing, an idea or yourself can be shown in the best light, so others want to buy in.

What it is like

You know how to persuade and show the value of things, in your own eyes too. A neat shortcut sometimes slides into stretching the truth, and only you can see where that line is.

When someone close has it

This person knows how to win people over and present a case well, often with a little added colour. Enjoy their enthusiasm, and ask for the details before you buy anything.

A question for today

Where am I adding a bit of colour today, and does it still serve the purpose?

The six lines of gate 26

  1. Line 1 · The Held Swing

This line builds the skill of selling on firm ground. Before you start persuading, you want to know what you really hold, and you can stop when the ground is uncertain. It is the caution that later gives your word its weight. When the ground takes long to appear, it is easy to hold back endlessly or, the other way round, to set off with a bare promise and check only later whether it can be kept.

  2. Line 2 · The Unhitched Wheel

Here the skill of persuading works without effort, and part of the gift is that you can choose not to drive. Like a cart with its axle unhitched, you stay put when the moment is wrong, and nobody has to brake you. Others come for your word when they need it, and then you speak lightly, without preparation. Sometimes someone takes this pause for a lack of ambition and pulls you into selling something you do not believe in.

  3. Line 3 · Daily Drill

This line learns to sell through trial. You take an idea to people, watch what catches and what does not, and adjust, like a driver who practises every day on the same road. Every slip tells you more than a smooth presentation. When the slips pile up, it is easy to start adding and embellishing to cover what you cannot do yet, and then the line between a shortcut and a stretch grows thin.

  4. Line 4 · Guarded Horns

Here the talent for persuading works for the people you know. You can tell those close to you a thing in time, before a matter grows and starts doing harm, like a guard fitted on a young bull's horns while it still hurts no one. Your influence among friends lies in the right word early, not the big one later. When harmony in the circle matters to you, it is easy to keep quiet about something that needed saying, or to dress it in a more comfortable version.

  5. Line 5 · The Blunted Tusk

This line makes others see you as someone who can persuade anyone. You settle disputes not by force but by changing direction, taking the edge off a matter before anyone reaches for it. People hand you the conversations they do not want to hold in person. When expectations grow, it is easy to promise more than can be delivered, and a stretched promise comes back to you, not to those who ordered it.

  6. Line 6 · The Open Road

Here the skill of selling matures into something that no longer needs persuasion. From a distance you see which words held up and which had to be stretched, and in time only the first kind remains. People learn from you not from what you say but from the fact that your road lies open and anyone can check it. Sometimes this distance looks like aloofness, especially to someone who is only learning to sell.
